Description

Herons, Egrets and Bitterns, combined called the Ardeidae, are a large group of still extant birds that can be found all over the globe. In general, they vary in size, but most of them have long legs, a long neck and a sharp and long beak to hunt for fishes and crustaceans.

Distribution & Fossil evidence

Herons, Egrets and Bitterns can be found all over the globe. Fossils have been found in numerous locations too. The oldest fossils date back to the Eocene of Europe, Asia and North America.
